Refugee Week, held from June 17 to June 23 in 2024, arrives at a time when the world continues to grapple with wars, genocides, and massacres. These ongoing conflicts remind us of the pressing need to extend solidarity and support to those who have been displaced.
This year’s theme, "Our Home," invites us to reflect on the concept of home, from the intimate spaces where we share meals to our shared planet.
The Significance of Refugee Week
Refugee Week is more than a commemoration; it's a call to action.
As conflicts rage on, the number of refugees and internally displaced persons reaches unprecedented levels. Participation in Refugee Week is crucial for several reasons:
1. Raising Awareness: By participating in events and activities, we help bring attention to the plight of refugees and the complex issues they face.
2. Building Empathy: Engaging with stories of displacement fosters empathy and understanding, breaking down barriers and prejudices.
3. Advocacy for Change: Collective action can influence policies and contribute to creating safer, more inclusive communities.
4. Supporting Integration: Activities during Refugee Week often provide opportunities for refugees to share their experiences and talents, aiding their integration into new communities.
Embracing the Theme: "Our Home"
This year's theme, "Our Home," is a powerful reminder of the basic human need for safety, belonging, and community. It encourages us to consider what home means to us and to recognize that, for many, home is a distant memory or a fragile hope.
Tuesday, June 18, 2024: Creative Activities
To honor this theme, we’ve planned special activities on June 18:
- Women’s Clay Workshop: Women will engage in creating clay artworks that represent their interpretation of home. Clay, with its transformative nature, symbolizes resilience and the potential for rebuilding. This hands-on activity allows participants to express their journeys and dreams for a new home.
"Hands of hope" will still be available for you to write your message of peace and support for children of Palestine.
- Children’s Cardboard Template Decoration: Children will decorate cardboard templates, adding elements that depict their ideal homes. This creative endeavor encourages children to envision a world where they feel safe and cherished, fostering a sense of hope and creativity.
In addition we will make a collaborative Art project : colouring pages to display in Cromwell house hub.
Why Participation Matters?
In times of turmoil, it’s easy to feel powerless. Participating in Refugee Week offers a tangible way to make a difference. Here’s why your involvement is crucial:
- Solidarity and Support: Your participation sends a message of solidarity to refugees, showing them they are not alone.
- Community Strength: Events like these strengthen community bonds, bringing together diverse groups to work towards common goals.
- Awareness and Education: By engaging in these activities, you help educate others about the realities of displacement and the importance of providing support.
