This September, The Arty-Crafty Crescent Club is delighted to launch a new weekly session dedicated entirely to the traditional Palestinian art of tatreez (embroidery). These gentle, community-focused gatherings will offer a space to learn, stitch, reflect, and connect—one cross-stitch at a time.
Why Tatreez?
Tatreez is more than just embroidery. It is a centuries-old form of cultural storytelling, passed down through generations of Palestinian women. Each motif and stitch holds meaning—signifying a village, a memory, or a longing for home. In times of displacement and erasure, tatreez has become a quiet yet powerful act of resistance and preservation.
Why Now—And Why Here?
Living in the UK, many of us—whether Palestinian, Muslim, or simply in solidarity—feel the weight of witnessing injustice from afar. It can be overwhelming, disheartening, and isolating. But gathering to make tatreez together is a way to reconnect: with heritage, with each other, and with something much bigger than ourselves.
We stitch not just to preserve a tradition, but to honour it. We stitch to bear witness, to make space for grief and joy, and to express our refusal to forget. And we stitch to find peace and power in collective, creative action.
What to Expect
Our sessions will be accessible to all levels—no prior experience needed. We’ll provide patterns, threads, and guidance to help you start your tatreez journey. Each gathering will also include space for reflection, discussion, and quiet stitching, grounded in community and care.
Whether you’re stitching for Palestine, for your ancestors, for healing, or simply to learn something new, you’re welcome.
Let’s come together to preserve, resist, and create. One stitch at a time.
