Rejection. It’s a word that can sting, especially in the realm of creativity where one’s work is often intertwined with personal passion and dedication.
Yet, as Carmela Vienna beautifully articulated in her recent LinkedIn post, rejection doesn’t have to be synonymous with defeat.
It can be a catalyst for growth, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
In the vibrant world of artistic expression, rejection is an inevitable part of the journey. Whether it’s a declined exhibition application or a passed-over submission, every artist has faced the disappointment of not receiving a coveted "yes."
However, as Carmela Vienna aptly pointed out, the value of our ideas and the pride we take in our craft should not be diminished by external validation.
Recently, I shared a heartfelt reflection, expressed in French, on the complexities of rejection in the textile art community. I candidly expressed my experience of applying for an exhibition in Portugal, where I was rejected. I was then surprised and dismayed to see a seemingly simplistic display of garments hanging from wooden structures (as seen on the winner’s Instagram) garner attention and accolades over my meticulously crafted beadwork and layered fabric compositions. To me her Art was more contemporary than pure Textile Art.
It’s understandable to feel disheartened when one’s efforts seem to go unnoticed or underappreciated.
However, amidst the initial disappointment lies an opportunity for introspection and growth. The journey of an artist is not defined solely by the recognition they receive but by the passion, dedication, and authenticity they bring to their craft.
Textile art, with its rich history and diverse techniques, is a realm ripe with potential for innovation and expression. While I have expressed disappointment in the perceived lack of representation for traditional textile practices, it’s important to recognize that art, by its very nature, is subjective.
What resonates with one audience may not necessarily resonate with another.
As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the creative industries, it’s essential to celebrate diversity and embrace the myriad forms of expression that enrich our artistic community.
Rejection, though challenging, serves as a reminder that success is not defined by external validation alone. It’s about staying true to oneself, continuing to explore new avenues of creativity, and finding fulfillment in the process.
To the artists who have faced similar rejections and bravely shared their stories, I offer words of encouragement and solidarity. Your dedication to your craft is paramount, and though the journey may be strewn with obstacles, your resilience and passion will undoubtedly propel you forward.
Let rejection be a stepping stone, not a stumbling block, on your artistic journey.
In the end, it’s not about the number of awards or followers, but the impact our art has on those who encounter it.
So, here’s to embracing rejection as an integral part of the creative process and finding beauty in the resilience it cultivates. Onward, fellow artists, for the best is yet to come.
