March Workshops at The Arty-Crafty Crescent Club : Honoring Inspiring Women in History Through Art & Craft

Writer: TiahTiah

Updated: Mar 1

March is a month of celebration, creativity, and reflection, and at The Arty-Crafty Crescent Club, we’re bringing together art, history, and community through inspiring women’s stories. Our workshops are open to everyone, regardless of faith or background, and provide a welcoming space to explore creativity, learn about different cultures, and connect through shared values of kindness, gratitude, and giving.

This month, in honor of Women’s History Month (March) and International Women’s Day (Saturday, 8th March 2025), we will highlight remarkable women in history with a special focus on Muslim women whose contributions have shaped the world. Each week, we will connect their stories to universal values, such as seeking knowledge, compassion, and generosity, through creative hands-on activities.

We swapped activities for week 2 & 4 because of the deadline for the Eid cards.

Workshop Locations & Times:

📍Wednesdays: 10 AM -12 PM at Cromwell House Community Hub (Week 3: Wednesday 19th will be a 1-hour session from 10-11 AM)

📍Thursdays: 10 AM -12 PM at Battersea Arts Center (week 4: No session on Thursday, 27th March 2025).

🚨Attending both sessions gives you more time and opportunity to develop your creativity and complete your artworks!

Workshop Schedule & Themes

Week 1: Seeking Knowledge -Coloring & Catch-Up

  • Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th March 2025

  • Inspiration: Fatima al-Fihri (Founder of the first university)

  • Activity: Islamic geometric pattern coloring

  • Theme: The pursuit of knowledge and learning is universal. Inspired by Fatima al-Fihri, who established the world’s first university, participants will color intricate geometric designs inspired by traditional architecture while reflecting on how education empowers individuals and communities.

  • Or bring an unfinished project to the club!

Week 2: Spreading Joy -Making Eid Cards for Children in Hospital

  • Wednesday 12th & Thursday 13th March 2025

  • Inspiration: Rufaida Al-Aslamia  (The first Muslim nurse and healthcare pioneer)

Rufaida Al-Aslamia is widely recognized as one of the first nurses and healthcare workers in Islamic history. She lived during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is known for her compassion, medical skills, and care for the sick and injured. She set up a field clinic in the mosque of the Prophet in Madinah and provided care not just during battles but also for the general community, especially for women and children.

Why she’s a great inspiration for hospital Eid cards:

1-Symbol of Care & Compassion: She represents kindness, healing, and looking after those in need is a perfect message for children who are unwell.

2-Muslim Role Model: Sharing her story can inspire to see how caring for others is part of Islamic history and values.

3-Connecting Faith & Healthcare: For children in hospital, it can be comforting to know that caring for the sick is something deeply valued in Islam, with strong historical roots.

  • Activity: Handmade Eid Cards for children in hospitals

  • Theme: Spreading joy and kindness to others is a value shared by all faiths and cultures. With Eid coming up, we will design and decorate handmade cards for children in hospitals, bringing them messages of hope, love, and celebration. Participants can include uplifting messages and artwork that reflect themes of joy and togetherness.

Week 3: Compassion & Care - Textile Art

  • Wednesday 19th (10-11 AM) & Thursday 20th March 2025

  • Inspiration: Dr. Hawa Abdi (Somali doctor and humanitarian)

  • Activity: “Healing Hands” Fabric Collage

  • Theme: Acts of kindness and care for others are central to all communities. Dr. Hawa Abdi dedicated her life to healing and protecting women and children during conflict. Participants will create a fabric collage representing helping hands, symbolizing support, kindness, and the power of community care.

🚨 Please note: The session at Cromwell House on Wednesday 19th March will be only one hour (10-11 AM) instead of the usual two hours.

Week 4: Gratitude & Reflection-Journaling

  •  Wednesday 26th

  •  Inspiration: Nana Asmaâ (Scholar, poet, and advocate for women’s education)

  • Activity: Creating gratitude journals

  •  Theme: Reflection and gratitude are important in every culture and belief system. Inspired by Nana Asma’s legacy of poetry and education, participants will design and personalize gratitude journals, using prompts to reflect on what they appreciate in life and how they can bring positivity to others.

🚨 No session on Thursday, 27th March 2025 at Battersea Arts Center.
